Rates are based on current general sales-tax rates. Taxability and place-of-supply rules can vary.

Choose a Canadian province or territory, enter an amount, and calculate the general sales tax on a pre-tax price or back tax out of a total that already includes it. The calculator separates federal and provincial portions where applicable. Use it for quick estimates and invoice checks, but verify zero-rated, exempt, place-of-supply, and specially taxed transactions against the Canada Revenue Agency or the relevant provincial authority.

Estimate Canadian sales tax by province or territory

Choose a province or territory and enter an amount to estimate the general GST, HST, PST, RST, or QST that applies. You can calculate tax on a pre-tax price or work backwards from a tax-included total.

Why Canadian sales tax varies

Canada has a 5% federal GST. Some provinces combine the federal and provincial portions into HST, while others apply a separate provincial tax. Alberta and the three territories generally have only the federal GST for ordinary taxable purchases.

Before-tax and tax-included calculations

For a pre-tax amount, the calculator applies the selected general rate to the amount you enter. For a tax-included amount, it divides by one plus the applicable rate to estimate the original price and tax portion.

Example: Saskatchewan

On a simple $100 taxable purchase in Saskatchewan, 5% GST is $5 and 6% PST is $6, producing an estimated total of $111.

Example: Ontario

On a $100 taxable purchase in Ontario, 13% HST is $13, producing an estimated total of $113.

Important limitations

This calculator is for general estimates. Real transactions can be affected by zero-rated or exempt supplies, place-of-supply rules, provincial exemptions, special product rules, tax-on-tax treatment, rounding, and changes to tax legislation. For filing, invoicing, or a transaction where the treatment matters legally, verify the result with the Canada Revenue Agency and the relevant provincial authority.

Frequently asked questions

Why can an invoice differ from this calculator?

The calculator uses general rates. The taxability of a specific product or service can be different.

Does this determine whether a business must register for GST/HST?

No. Registration obligations depend on CRA rules and business circumstances; this tool only performs arithmetic.
